1. Why did you start trail running?

I started trail running as a way to escape the busyness of everyday life. Growing up in Christchurch, New Zealand, it was easy to access the trails and mountains. Over time, I found myself drawn to the sense of freedom and fulfilment it gave me. It just felt like the right thing to do, it became a space where I could be completely myself.

2. Which race are you running this year? Could you tell us more about the distance and elevation?

This year, I’m running the UTMB main event. It’s 170 kilometers with around 10,000 meters of elevation gain. Every time I say those numbers, I wonder why I keep coming back! This will be my eighth UTMB, and it’s been 10 years since my first. It’s amazing to think about, but I still feel as excited as I did the first time I lined up.

3. What do you enjoy most about trail running?

What I love most is that trail running feels like what I’m meant to be doing. I enjoy the solitude it offers, but I also value the camaraderie and friendships it creates. Whether it’s five hours alone with my dog or with a group of close friends, every run feels special. I also love the simplicity of it—throwing on a pair of shoes, grabbing a backpack with gear, and heading into the mountains under my own power. It’s a thrill to plan wild routes and see what I can achieve.

4. What do you think will be your biggest challenge at this year’s UTMB?

The biggest challenge isn’t the course itself—it’s the mental and physical preparation leading up to it. The distance and elevation are constants, but the real test lies in how you handle adversity during the race. Everyone faces challenges between the start and finish in Chamonix. Success comes down to how well you manage those moments and keep moving forward. Those who adapt the best will perform the best.

5. Who has been your biggest support in your trail running journey?

Without a doubt, my biggest supporters have been my parents. Since I started taking trail running seriously in 2013 or 2014, they’ve been unwavering in their encouragement. They’ve always believed in me, even when there was uncertainty about where this path might lead. Their support isn’t just for the good times—they’re there for the tough moments too. Knowing they’re proud of me no matter what keeps me motivated to chase my dreams and keep striving for great results.
